Long-term Summer Temperature and Precipitation Records

Long-term Summer Temperature and Precipitation Records

Abstract:
Monthly temperature and precipitation data collected at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) beginning in 1912. Values are aggregated into monthly means, maximums, minimums and totals.

Methods:

Monthly mean for 1912-1936 taken from F.C.Gates publications. Monthly mean for 1937-1966 taken from B.Benninghoff's summaries. From 1912 to 1929 measurements were recorded in the old camp. Frank Gates' handwritten records are archived at UMBS (contact the Resident Biologist.) In 1930 temperatures started being recorded in the same location as they are now (middle of camp), with very similar National Weather Service instruments. The precipitation was probably recorded using some sort of can - several old tin ones are available in the UMBS stockroom. Since 1979 precipitation was recorded from the acid rain site, using a Belfort weighing gauge.
